Somewhere in Vietnam

29 June 1967

Dear Jim, Bev & Monique,

Am finally taking time out to write a few letters.  I was out most of yesterday with tanks.  It is sorta fun to ride on them but you can sure get dirty.

Man, the mail situation is really fouled up.  We get mail about once a week and sometimes less often.  By the time I write and tell you what I been doing and you write back, the news is history.

What all have you got growing in the garden?  I can just see Regina in the garden.  I suppose you have your new walks all in now.  They will be a help when the snow falls.  You can shovel a path real easy now and use a little rock salt.

I hope and pray all is well for Bev as the month is getting nearer.  Luci Johnson sure came thru with a huge baby, huh!  It was even headlines in the "Stars and Stripes".

I can't see where you would have much use for stock racks except like you said for hunting.  Can you set them off when you aren't using them?

You and the boys must have really done some work over at the cemetery.  Now maybe the people will follow suit and fix up the lots.  It could be made into a beautiful little cemetery.

While you go out in the bush hunting deer and elk, I'll be in the bush hunter water buffalos over here.

We had to build-up our gun position this morning.  I  put all new sandbags around it and built it up higher.  I have a good parapet for the gun to rest on too.  It looks much better now.

I sure wish they would tell us when and where we are going next.  There are all kinds of rumors going around, a man sure gets to thinking and hoping.  One thing the Corps has taught me tho!  Always hope for the best but expect the worst!

The flies around here drive me nuts.  Sometimes I get so pissed I wish we were out in the bush.  Life is pretty easy here on 29.  We eat lots, drink beer and do little work.  The main things is standing watch at nite & that's it.

I am ready for R&R anytime now.  I want five days to forget about this place for awhile.  A man can take only so much.  I hope to go about the first of August.  I'll be short when I got back so that wouldn't be bad.

I hope all is well at home.  I hope Dad's neck is okay.  Give my love to all!

Love, your brother

Alan
