Somewhere in Vietnam

3 August 1967

Dear Jim and Bev & 1 or 2,

I am finally taking time to get a letter off to you.  I bet things are quite hectic around your household now.  Beverly should be delivering any day now, probably before this letter reaches you.  I pray all goes well and good.  What does Regina think of the idea of a brother or sister?

I won't say we need rain, Jim cuz we have plenty on the way.  The monsoon has already began further south.  It has been cloudy the past few days.  July was the hottest damn month I've seen, it was a scrocher!  I'm glad the rains are coming cuz they bring Operations to a stop.  We have only a couple left before September.  I am back with 81s again so Dad and Mom should feel better.  It is a lot more safe here.  We are set up with "Mike" company on bridges north of Tam Ky and looks like we may be here another 30 days or more.  It isn't bad out here except for "C" rats.  I can't eat much of them anymore.  The engineers been bringing us sodas from Tam Ky each day as at least we can refresh ourselves.  They bring ice too and we have a cooler! #1. huh!

I saw the damage at the Da Nang airbase and it was pretty sad.  $48 million estimated damage in all.  The SAMS are not effective as the 120 mm, 140 mm and 160 mm rockets the NVA use.  Those rockets do some damage too.

Too bad about poor Uncle Jack getting his arm hurt.  Frank wrote but never said exactly what happened.  He isn't getting any younger ya know.

Glad to hear the boys been working.  What does Joe have the Comet now!  Keep on his ass so he doesn't get into trouble.  How has Jerry been lately?

Mom said one of my old College "flames" called asking for me.  She and I had some good times and she is Catholic too.  I hope she writes cuz I'll go see her when I go up to Denver to see Charlie.

Time is moving pretty good!  I'm down to 120 days now.  I am taking R&R in Sept so the last two months should be more bearable.  I hope I make it home for Xmas this year.

My prayers are with you all!

Love, your brother
Alan
