Somewhere in Vietnam

24 Aug 1967

Dear Jim, Beverly and family,

I know how happy and proud you and Beverly must be of your new son.  I sure was happy and relieved to get the word.  You two will definitely have your hands full for awhile.  How is Monique taking the new baby?  I imagine she will be jealous for awhile but that is normal.

I sure feel like a Turd Jim.  I never even wished Bev a happy birthday.  I guess I was thinking of the new baby so much I forgot.  I sent my belated wishes (a month late almost).

I am sorry to hear Bev had such a hard time with the delivery.  I think you are right to quit.  I hope she is feeling well and taking it easy.  I sure am proud of the name you gave the boy.  Yes, Jim, I am really proud.  I suppose you have had him baptized by now.  Has McGrath left yet or is it definite that he is going elsewhere.  I went to Mass yesterday.  Both Chaplains are down taking care of our spiritual needs.  I need to have a good talk with Father when we get back in.  He is certainly a wonderful man.  I talked to him when I was in the hospital at Chu Lai.

Man, it is hotter than hell already this morning.  It is going to be a "bear" today.  I'll be glad when the rains come steady but then of course it will be muddy!  Oh! well only 98 days to go and I'll be on the way home!

Yes, I recall seeing that old Langford fellow on the horse a couple of times.  I almost got him a couple of times myself. Too bad he had to go that way.

The rain has been hitting you pretty heavy, huh.  Is it too late to help the beans or not?  I saw a picture of the new addition out at Owen's elevator.  Looks like it will hold a lot of wheat.  How are Mr. Owens and Coker.  I sure like those two men.

I didn't even know Dava was in the Army.  I thought if he went he would go to the Corps but he is better off in the Army for taking it easy.  No, Jim their infiltration course is nothing like ours!

I will be glad to get home and back in school.  I may work until September instead of starting in the middle of a school year.  I don't want to jump right into school so soon anyway.  I have written to the University of San Francisco for information. I am thinking about going there or CU.

We are on Hill 29 right now.  I guess we will be here until the 29th then go to 63 for a couple of days and then out on an operation from two to five days long.

It isn't bad up here on 29 cuz we get two hot meals a day and the chow is good.
We will all be glad to get in to 63 tho.  They have a club, flick, and PX up there now.

I gotta get to Da Nang and have my eyes checked I think.  They sure have been bothering me lately.  I may need new glasses.

I will close now as I have to take the troops to a class on Forward Artillery Control.  My love and prayers are with all of you.

Love, your brother

Alan
