| In 1857, Napoleon III instituted the Medal of St Helena in order to recognize
the "grognards" who had so faithfully followed Napoleon Bonaparte on his many military campaigns between 1792 and 1815.
In fact, the emperor had remembered his glorious soldiers during his exile on the Island of Saint Helena where he dictated
his last will and testament which left half of his personal fortune to his former soldiers.
The ranks of the "Grande Armée" still numbered about 405,000 soldiers. While most were French citizen, many were from the various countries which had come under the control of the emperor (Follow this French link to learn more). Among the hundreds of thousands of surviving soliders, we are surprized to find Pilons and Pillons. A wonderful website presents a database of many of the soldiers which includes 9 Pilons and 20 Pillons. We are grateful to the individuals who worked so selflessly to make this information available. |
